What Matthew Perry’s Story Left in Me

It took me a little while—but not that long—to finish Matthew Perry’s autobiography. I closed the book yesterday, and it left me full of emotions I’m still carrying.

It’s heartbreaking to learn how deeply he struggled behind the scenes, even while making the world laugh every day. His pain was real, relentless—and yet, he brought joy to so many. There’s something profoundly tragic in that.

It reminded me of a quiet truth: those who suffer in silence often do the most to make others happy.

One part of his story that struck me deeply was his unfulfilled wish to have a child. I kept thinking—maybe if that had happened, everything might have changed. Maybe not. But I wish it had. I wish life had given him that chance.

Despite all the dark and shocking moments, for me, the book was also incredibly inspiring. The biggest message I took away was this:

Even when we suffer, we can still do good. We can still help. We can still love.

That’s what I’ll carry with me from his story.

The book is full of raw emotion—laughter, anger, sadness, joy, despair, hope. I found myself laughing out loud one moment and crying like a little girl the next. It’s a rollercoaster, but a meaningful one.

I truly believe it’s worth reading—even if you’ve never watched Friends, even if you didn’t know him as an actor. Just know this:

He was a man who suffered greatly, who fought bravely, who didn’t give up. He wanted to win.

But sometimes… the monster is stronger.

Rest in peace, Matthew.

And thank you for leaving behind your truth.

Amen.
