Comfort in Fiction: When Real Life Feels Too Heavy

There are days when we just can’t go outside. When we’re stuck at home, unable to escape to the places that usually help us feel better. I have those days too.

When I’m tied to one place, overwhelmed by sadness or anxiety, it often leads to dark thoughts—what I sometimes call “snakes.” And while it’s not a perfect solution, I’ve found a little trick that helps me get through the worst moments: I turn on the TV.

That’s it. I watch something. A movie. A show. Anything to transport me, to lift me out of my own thoughts—even just for a while.

Some series have literally saved me from slipping into deep depression. I’ve watched Friends, The Big Bang Theory, Supernatural, and many others—some of them more than once. I don’t mind rewatching them because the familiarity and humor bring comfort. They remind me how to smile again.

When I’m not in the mood for a series, I’ll put on a movie. Sometimes it’s something I’ve already seen, something that feels safe. Other times, I’ll take a chance on something new. Sure, sometimes it’s terrible—but at least I know what not to pick next time. And sometimes, it’s exactly what I needed.

What matters is this: when you can’t face your own reality, it’s okay to step into a fictional one—for a while. There’s no shame in it. The danger only comes if we stay there too long and forget how to come back.

That’s why it’s important to talk to someone. Confide in someone you trust, someone who can help keep you grounded and gently pull you back when needed. We all need that.

So if today is one of those heavy days, go ahead—make some popcorn, brew your favorite tea or cocoa, put on that show that makes you laugh, and let yourself feel okay. Even if just for a little while.
