People often ask how to clear their head or break free from the vicious cycle of worrying. The truth is—it’s not easy. Not everyone can do it right away. But what I can recommend, from my own experience, is simple: get outside.
Ideally, go for a run. Running is incredibly liberating—it clears the mind and lightens the heart. But I understand that not everyone can or enjoys running. So if that’s the case, just walk. Start with walking. Over time, you might even feel like giving running a try.
You don’t need anything fancy—just a pair of proper running shoes. Yes, they should be real running shoes, not just casual sneakers, but you don’t have to break the bank. They just need to be comfortable and support your movement.
Whenever you feel overwhelmed—like it’s too much, like you’re drowning or suffocating—try stepping outside. Get fresh air. Remove yourself from the environment that’s weighing you down. Maybe even distance yourself from the person or situation that’s causing the pain.
Start walking. Go to that park you’ve been meaning to visit. Revisit familiar places. If there’s a forest, a river, or a lake nearby—perfect. Let nature become your safe space. The beauty of the outside world can ground you in the present and gently pull you out of your own mind.
I’m lucky enough to have a lake just outside my window, and I run or walk around it often. Every time I put on my shoes and head out, it’s just me. Sure, there are other people around, but I focus inward. I feel in control. I don’t have to do anything or prove anything—I can just be.
Sometimes I cry while running. Sometimes I laugh or hum a song. However it comes out, I let it. That emotional release is healing.
So please—try it. Don’t shut yourself away. Don’t lock your emotions inside. Give your mind space to breathe so you can feel alive again.
